Jaymes Swimwear x Joanne Mckay x Celeste Twikler Earrings

BEAUTY JOANNE MCKAY

Words from Jaymes Swimwear Blog:
I have followed Joanne on instagram for quite some time now, so when i went to Bali i was so excited to shoot with her! I think she is just the perfect Jaymes Girl, so naturally beautiful inside and out. Can you believe she has a baby?!
We spent the afternoon shooting down at Balangan beach, it was such a fun relaxed vibe sipping on coconuts and watching the sunset. Being Bali it was incredibly humid, she was literally dabbing the sweat beads off her face haha lucky she didn’t have much makeup on. I found it really  hard to pick just these photos, every photo of her is amazing!

Souls of Byron x Celeste Twikler

Upon entering Celeste's home studio, it felt light and bright, being in someone's space gives you a real sense of who they are. I am such a lover of light, airy spaces and felt right at home from the outset. Celeste's collections from abroad coupled with her own designs brought a real warmth and sense of character to the studio. I will call Celeste a designer as she has a multitude of creative talents, illustrator, jeweller, I think designer encompasses it all. Like many Celeste decided to make her favourite holiday place her permanent abode, and is now, yet another, amazing creative one in our melting pot.
Celeste was bright and bubbly and a pleasure to capture on film. As we always do, we also talked the more meaningful, the stuff where the juice is, the connection, we talked friendship groups, heart break and life in general.  Celeste's motto that she lives by: Live by the sea, swear by the moon, love by the stars, care for the earth. So fitting for this sweet soul. I love when a persons essence is congruent with it all, from the fabrics they wear, to the words they use and the way one carries themselves. This is what I got from Celeste, such a lovely teaching.
'Another Souls shoot another connection.' Maybe I put this to Elle for our motto. I can see it now, her nose will wrinkle, she will laugh and politely tell me "I don't think so, but nice thought.”

The Vista x At Dusk x Celeste Twikler

live to travel, travel to live – with jeweller celeste twikler

A DESIRE FOR THE EXQUISITE AND AN EYE FOR BEAUTY HAVE LEAD THIS JEWELLERY DESIGNER ALONG A BEAUTIFULLY CREATIVE PATH
Travel is indeed intrinsic to your life and comes through beautifully in your work. For you how do the two work hand in hand?
I must admit, I do have a “live to travel, travel to live” attitude to life. I have an overwhelming passion for adventure which needs to be feed and my business gives me the perfect excuse to go on a sourcing trip. My previous trips have certainly helped with the way I design my jewellery. I’m a visual creature, I love exquisite things, they don’t have to be shiny they just need to have a story.
Places like India get my creativity going into overdrive, every turn throws up an exotic surprise. It’s so exciting knowing that around each new corner and in every new alleyway there is an endless array of trinkets, idols and objects for sale just waiting for a new lease on life. Sometimes, the most beautiful objects I’ve found inspiration from are those that others have overlooked or in that particular country seem unusable. Its not just the objects that inspire me, it can be the smell of spices, the stench of rubbish, the constant sound of horns and yelling of street vendors, the bright colours and endless shelves of materials in ever texture imaginable. All this has me “Oohhing and Aahhing” all day long. It’s sensory heaven for me, I thrive on the experience and all these things naturally flow into my designs.
Your recent campaign encapsulates the spirit of India, with images reminiscent of the Holy River Ganges. Tell us about the concept behind this beautiful new range.
For sure. I created the designs while I was in India, but the campaign was shot here in Australia, although some of the images could easily pass for the banks of the Ganges. The Maharani, wife to Maharaja, was the inspiration but Chandrani, wife to the moon, was my final muse.
The photographer, Pip from ‘Seagypsea’ and exotic beauty Nakisha did an amazing job at recreating the mystery I see in the Indian women. The women that dress in traditional clothing seem to be unaware of just how ethereal they appear in their flowing saris and masses of jewellery. There is no evidence of vanity which is refreshing after being in a culture that is so ego driven.
They appear to effortlessly perform the most strenuous labour with such grace and dignity, it is enchanting to see. I wanted my pieces to be worn with the same attitude, loads of layers and textures but it must seem effortless.
Living and having your studio space in gorgeous Byron Bay must create a beautiful balance for you, have you always been an ocean lady?
Yes, in fact you could say that it’s encoded in my DNA. For most of my life the family has lived near the beach because of Dad’s job. We would often go to work with him so if we weren’t out on a boat, we were swimming, playing in the sand or beach combing hence my particular fascination for shells. I was known to set up my shop counter which was an upturned cardboard box from where I tried to flog shells, fossils, worn-down bits of coloured glass and all manner of jetsam. Sadly, I have the photos to prove it. We did all the usual activities which country kids did, tennis, basketball, bikes even motor bikes but it was surfing lessons which really grabbed me.
However the waters off the Mornington Peninsula (Victoria) can be quite wild and woolly but more particularly cold. I can’t tell you just how much I hate the cold. So the lure of a warmer climate and waters became irresistible and the rest, as they say, is history. After first moving to Queensland I found myself here in Byron Bay. I’ve created a business and made many great friends, even my rad little brother has followed me here and my surfing expertise is definitely improving. It’s all done to the tune of a great climate.
There was a recent moment in India involving a sari…? tell us about it…
Ahha! Yeah! I do have a beautiful antique sari with silver thread but wouldn’t have the courage to wear it here in Australia for fear of looking real a git or being culturally offensive.
So when in Rome, do as the Romans or in my case when in India, I did pluck up the courage to enter a sari shop and was overwhelmed by the welcoming enthusiasm of the ladies. There seemed to be hundreds of them who just came from nowhere, they clucked and fussed around me and pretty soon I was swathed in yards and yards of a cellophane stiff olive green sari which had been tucked, wrapped, pleated and draped around me. The initiation ceremony was over and I was set free and alone into the streets of Varanasi dressed in my excruciatingly and obviously brand new unyieldingly stiff sari.
Varansi is a maze of dark alleys but not dark enough for this little black duck. Regardless, tourists do attract stares but I felt like every eye was on me and that there were so many people turning to look. Was I being offensive? Did I look stupid? Worst of all possibilities, did those women in the sari shop stitch me right up? Hell on earth, I was at a party and the only one in fancy-dress until I entered an alley near my hotel.
There was a man seating on the ground, his eyes opened wide, he smiled and raised his hands in a gesture of prayer. We smiled, we laughed and bowed to each other and with uncharacteristic self confidence instead of the hotel, I went to the banks of The Ganga. I was greeted warmly by the women and I felt accepted even told I looked beautiful.
I was lucky enough that my travelling companion caught a few of those priceless moments with his trusty camera. As a framed photo above my bed it is a constant reminder to me to be brave, test the boundaries, embrace all peoples and always, always be ready to laugh and most importantly, laugh at oneself.
This frame wall above your bed captures loads of memories and special moments of you and loved ones on the road. What is a moment you would love to revisit?
Honestly, none. Each was perfect in its own time and place but I would prefer to create more memories. Not to say that I don’t reflect or am unsentimental but I’m always ready for new experiences which in turn create more memories. I do have more walls I can fill … haha!
Magic is in the air for the CT brand, what’s next in the universe for you…?
Magic indeed, well, I hope so and very nice of you to say but if that is my future then my answer must be that a magician must never reveal the secret to her tricks.

It's Now Cool X Celeste Twikler interview

How many styles do you have in the Celeste Twikler summer range?
The Chandrani collection has over twenty designs which incorporates the use of brass, silver, cowrie shells, turquoise and Celestite.
Boho-glam and gypsy are the two distinct styles I went for because of how I was feeling at the time. I was travelling through India and seeing the culture, beauty and grace of the Indian women especially the Banjara (nomadic/gypsy) women had me so intrigued.
Any piece I design begins with an idea or inspiration from what is around me or a personal need for something specific, I then add elements for versatility so anyone can wear it, no matter your personal style. I made the collection perfect to wear with a crochet bikini or an LBD.
When did you launch Celeste Twikler?
It's hard to say really, somewhere around 2011. I had no plan to launch a jewellery business.
I was merely tinkering around with jewellery in my spare time as I was an illustrator. It was all more of an evolution rather than a decision. I had done a few jewellery illustrations for a clients before, I was bringing their ideas to life through drawings and had so many of my own ideas so I thought "Well why can't I do this for myself?"
It was after this realisation that I decided to unite two of my greatest loves - jewellery and illustration - and started getting a little more serious about it seeing as from my early teens I was always pulling apart stuff I found in op shops or even my mum's stuff to reinvent pieces I wanted to wear but couldn't find. However it was my first trip to India where I can truly say it began to take form of what it is now.
Where is Celeste Twikler based from?
I spend my time in Suffolk Park just outside Byron Bay. It was a place I really enjoyed visiting, so I decided to make my favourite holiday destination my home, to me that just makes sense. I found a great little beach shack about 50 metres from the beach which suits me perfectly. I have since attached a little studio to it.
The studio can open up completely so I feel like I am outside even when sitting at my computer! I still feel like I am on holidays, even after all these years. I believe it has a lot to do with the fact that I love my job- you know what they say: "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life".
What led you to the decision to launch your jewellery brand Celeste Twikler?
The first serious collection 'Elemental' I launched in 2014.
It all came about while I was in India. As I said earlier, I had always played around with making small pieces for myself and family and selling them at markets along side my illustration. I was in Rajasthan when I sat down with my sketch book at the end of the day and thought. "If I could wear any piece of jewellery what would it be?" I tried to block out any fashion trends that where happening at the time and focused on why I started making jewellery in the first place. It got me thinking about the first piece of jewellery I ever made. It was an elastic cuff that I spent days sewing on as many cowrie shells as I possibly could. After this, the ideas started flowing and it just came together so well. I was even lucky enough to stumble across some beautiful vintage cowries a few days later which had so much character. After the response I received from the first range, I thought I had better keep it up, and the second range, 'Chandrani' was born. It has been received just as well, if not better than the Elemental collection. I am itching to design next year's range, I already have a few ideas brewing!
Who is the Celeste Twikler girl?
We all are.
I don't think there is one typical Celeste Twikler girl.
It can be a woman that has a desire for travel and cultures. A girl that has a love for nature and the sea and it's reflected in her style and easy way of living. The woman that plans her outfits around her jewellery rather than the other way around, someone that stacks & layers all her favourite pieces and mixes silver and brass, she doesn't just wear it how it's shown in the product picture she makes it her own. A woman that enjoys fashion but it doesn't rule her and it would never get in the way of truly enjoying an adventure it would only be a natural part of it. The beauty of all Celeste Twikler \ girls is to be who you are and find a little bit of amazing in everything every day of her life.
Tell us a bit about the ethos behind the Celeste Twikler brand?
Everything with good intentions or not at all.
What has been one of your favourite Celeste Twikler styles of all time? The Fundamental ring. I came up with the design and words in about 10 minutes. I sat back, looked at the drawing and said to myself "Yep, nailed it". I wear it everyday and no one but no one will prise it from me. It's still one of my best sellers and I have now introduced it in sterling silver.
If you could have anyone wear Celeste Twikler who would it be?
Easy! Rocky Barnes, Flick Palmateer, Olive Cooke & Madeline Joy Relph, their adventures on instagram so inspiring. . So if you're out there ladies…
What is your favourite summer style?
A loose and natural toned beach dress with layers and layers of effortless jewellery that has been collected from friends, loved ones and every corner of the globe, a big grin from surfing all day and unbrushed hair.
Where is your favourite summer designation?
Vanuatu. The Blue Lagoon was a dream come true. I was lucky enough to go there for my 30th birthday.
Actually, I even made a crochet mermaid tail to swim around in just for the occasion.
Your only 30 in a blue lagoon once so you may as well do it with style.
How would you describe Celeste Twikler in five words?Who am I to judge myself, so those who know me say I'm impulsive, shy, resourceful, generous and hungry. I'm always hungry!
Do you have any exciting future plans for the label?
Always. I'm planning to get to Turkey and Morocco next. I would love to give homewares and clothing a go so that I can return with more than just jewellery ideas.
What is a quote or piece of advice you live by?
Live by the sea, swear by the moon, love by the stars, care for the earth.
Summer is all about… The feeling that something exciting is about to happen.
